Antique Slag Glass Table Lamps

Slag glass is the term given to decorative pressed glass that has been given an opaque look with streaks running through it to give it a marbled appearance. The use of slag glass is extremely effective in creating a decorative finish and when applied to a table lamp shade it is particularly effective thanks to the way the light plays off the various shades and highlights.

The manufacture of slag glass originated in the 19th century and involved the process of adding slag from iron-smelting works to molten glass. The results were the creation of richly marbled patterned glass that became extremely popular with collectors and the general population of homemakers.

It is hardly surprising that slag glass table lamps have become extremely popular with designers and decorators because they are a simple way of introducing texture and color to a room.

Below is a selection of table lamps featuring slag glass lamp shades in a variety of different shapes and sizes. Among the lamps you will find here include many that were made during the Art Nouveau era including a selection of Tiffany lamps. Another style that made good use of slag glass was the Arts and Crafts design era, all of which represent some of the finest decorative lamps ever made.

It is not uncommon today for dealers to refer to any lamp shade made from glass featuring the odd streak or pattern as a slag glass lamp shade. This is where the buyer should look more closely and inspect the quality of the shade themselves. A lamp that contains a shade made from true slag glass may be determined by checking the pressed glass closely to discover how thoroughly the streaking and marbling has been effected.

Many of these lamps have been designed to be truly decorative or artistic masterpieces. With ornate overlay in brass or wrought iron to give the glass even greater impact. One can only imagine the amount of work that might go into the creation of some of the bent glass lamps that were extremely popular from around the 1920s and onwards. It’s due to the work that was required to manufacture each lamp that they were expensive to buy when first made and are still worth a great deal now.

One of the big problems with trying to buy antique lamps from some of the most famous designers and lamp manufacturers is ensuring it is the genuine article. Lamps made by such companies as Handel and Tiffany had labels, signatures and markings that identified them as authentic. However there are also a lot of replicas that are being identified as the real thing and being offered for far in excess of what they are worth. It is very important that you do your homework in finding out what markings to look for to confirm the lamp you are buying is the genuine article.
